NJ TRANSIT is New Jersey’s public transportation corporation. NJ TRANSIT is the nation’s third largest provider of bus, rail and light rail transit, linking major points in New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia. On 236 bus routes and 11 rail lines statewide, NJ TRANSIT provides nearly 223 million passenger trips each year.
The management work of NJT’s leadership, executives and managers is supported only by office productivity tools – spreadsheets, word processing documents, email and calendar appointments. But the importance of the work they’re managing – capital projects, passenger communications, new technology implementations – demanded much stronger and smoother collaboration tools.
SVAM established an agile program to rapidly design, develop and deploy a SharePoint collaboration platform in manageable releases. An overall SharePoint collaboration vision was quickly developed, and then rapid releases began. Daily and weekly scrums are employed. SVAM’s Mexico delivery center has a SharePoint center of excellence that supported the rapid development/implementation.
The first release, a site to help NJT’s Technology Steering Committee manage decisions on their thousands of capital projects, was implemented in three weeks with high user satisfaction. That site already has its enhancement release planned. A second segment of the platform, being developed now, will help NJT manage all requests for changes and enhancements to the systems for passenger communications (trackside, roadside, web, radio and mobile).
